Can I Deposit a Check for Someone Else in Their Chase bank Account?
Have a friend who is not well and needs me to deposit check. Just wondering if I can just deposit it to their account and if id is usually required or is that for cash deposit?

I suppose it depends on the bank, but I have done this for my elderly mother many times. Not at an ATM, but either the drive-thru or with a teller inside.
Employees at companies do this routinely, I'd imagine?

Yes. You can deposit for others. You need a deposit slip and to write down their account number.
I had a tenant a while back and an older realtor that connected us and this was the system that the tenant paid rent (into a chase account)

yes
have the chase account deposit slip
if done physically a the local chase bank location:
cash or check to deposit
teller window inside or...drive thru window if available.
ask teller for an account balance and they will write it on a slip of paper for you.

Would the bank even know you’re not the account holder? I can’t recall being asked for ID when depositing a check.

Re: Can I Deposit a Check for Someone Else in Their Chase bank Account?
These days many banks like to ID people with their ATM card and PIN when at the teller window, it speeds up finding and bringing the account up on their computer. They'll still deal with you without it, but be sure to have the account number - preferably on a deposit slip. If you have a completed deposit slip and an endorsed check ("For Deposit Only"), you probably wouldn't even need to have a conversation... just hand it to them.

One time I had a teller insisted in seeing two pieces of ID. I showed my DL and she wanted another piece of ID. I refused and complained to the bank main office and was told that the teller was incorrect.

Have them sign it and write the account number underneath and use a deposit slip. I've been doing this for people since the '60s.
Banks will also print deposit slips if the name matches the check, etc.

I'll add that a $2k monthly mobile deposit limit would drive me to a new bank immediately. Our limit is $75k, not that we're high rollers or have any reason to go near it.

Probably yes if you logon as the other person. Mail, for sure if you have the right stuff. For Vanguard, for our LLC, mobile check deposit does not work for that type of account since the switch to brokerage at least 5 yrs ago. So we have to mail checks to Vanguard in El Paso, at least a 7 day effort after printing a deposit slip and mailing.
I agree with others, it depends on the bank. I believe it also depends on the name(s) on the account and the user logon.
Apparently despite my and DW's name showing on a Fido CMA account registration, it is my account when I logon. We each have an independent logon to the same account.
I once logged into the mobile app and mobile deposited a check made out solely in her name; it showed as credited. The next day it was reversed and the amount debited, w/o explanation. I called and was told that I cannot mobile deposit a check made out in her name only. Discussed names on the account, etc.
Eventually she logged on, mobile deposited the same check and it cleared.

Anyone else concerned at the posts saying a bank will print or write an account number for you if have a check in their name.
So I can write a check to a person, drive to their bank, and get their account number? It's only a small and very public step from there to get a routing number then you can get to the account - enough for some fraud.
I find this hard to believe. Maybe I misread though.

I can't get past the $2,000 mobile deposit limit. I've never heard of one that small. It would drive me to change banks, which would understandably be hard for someone who is sick though.
I'm with Fidelity and had no idea what my limit was so I looked it up. It says $250,000 daily deposit limit.

According to https://static.chasecdn.com/content/dam ... bed_LA.pdf "maximum amount you may deposit through the Service is $2,000 per day, or $5,000 in any rolling 30 day period, unless you are a (i) Chase Private Client, in which case the maximum is $25,000 per day, or $100,000 in any rolling 30 day period, or a (ii) client with a J.P. Morgan Private Bank account, in which case the maximum is $100,000 per day or $500,000 in any rolling 30 day period." So it is not unusual. My credit union has a $25,000 limit.

I've done it at both Chase and Wells Fargo for friends/family that were out of the country for extended periods of time. We had the account numbers, filled out deposit slips, and deposited the checks directly with a teller after explaining the situation. No issues.

If your friend signs the back of the check, you can deposit it into his/her account. No ID is required unless you want cash back.

Re: Can I Deposit a Check for Someone Else in Their Chase bank Account?
I used to deposit checks into my mom's account with no signature. (I also routinely did not sign checks when depositing into my own account.) I did write "For deposit only" on the back. As long as the name on the To line of the check (roughly) matches the name on the account, and you are doing a deposit (not requesting cash back), there should not be a problem. That said, I did run into a glitch one time when I tried to do the deposit through an ATM. I think it was treated as a mobile deposit, which apparently required a signature.
Check with the bank where you intend to make the deposits to see what they advise.

I use a regional bank, and that was my deposit limit for checks until I found out my millennial kids had much higher limits at BOA. It took a few calls to the bank, but I was able to get my limit raised to $10K or so.

I have deposited checks for others as long as the check is signed and you have all of the account info. It’s only an issue if you withdraw. Depositing a really large amount may prompt for an id due to reporting requirements.

I read the attachment and your quote is accurate. But I am not a Chase Private Client, and I only have a lower tier checking account (total checking). My limit is $25,000. A friend of mine had a lower limit and called the bank and they increased the limit

I believe that is for cash deposits, not checks.
I was curious and looked up some info
https://blog.fraudfighter.com/bid/80625 ... 0-000-Rule
So what constitute cash would be something like cash as well as cashier check, but personal check do not count. I assume this is due to the tracability, since personal check can easily be traced.

The mobile banking apps are really handy for depositing smaller checks.
There seems to be some limit on amounts at my bank.

And Fidelity can and will up that limit, I've deposited a 5-figure check via mobile deposit twice, and the last time I looked they doubled that daily limit.

At most banks you no longer "need" a deposit slip - at least not at banks I have helped people at. In fact, many have gotten rid of them. I recently walked into a Santander bank branch to deposit a check for someone and all the desks with slots that held the slips where empty (desks and slots still there - but were empty of slips). When I asked the teller they said "we don't use those any more - just let me know the account number". They deposited the check no problem. They stamped the back of the check - I asked for a paper receipt.
OP: I wouldn't trust the ATM deposit - there have been some cases of lost items. I would go to a teller and ask for a receipt. I use mobile banking for all my stuff but when depositing a check for someone else I always like to get a paper receipt to give them next time I see them.

I think typically is $5K. I remember receiving a large check once and tried to deposit it and of course it didn't work because it was over $5K. I think ATM have similar limitations.
At chase, particularly at Cashierless branches, there is usually ATM machine that takes large deposits and also make large withdraws. What I have notice is that some transaction like withdrawing large amount will trigger a 2FA to your phone, which you must approve. Be warned that if you don't approve, your ATM card will get cancelled. This happened to me when I notice the the 2FA when I attempt to withdraw and then when I tried to reply, I accidently hit the autoanswer to no.

I used to do this for my daughter when she was in college -- having the account number helps. Chase won't tell you that, but the teller should confirm that the name matches the account.

My bank wouldn't tell me what the (mobile deposit) limit is when I called. They said they had to look at my account and tell me what MY limit was. So it seems they (at least my regional bank) vary it based upon customer profile.
