Job Summary

The director of theater production manages all academicproductions, as well as coordinates with other Universitystakeholders to help facilitate University events, rentals, andtouring performances in the J. Scheidegger Center for theArts.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

The intent of this job description is to provide a representationof the types of duties and level of responsibilities that will berequired of positions given this title and shall not be construedas a declaration of the total of the specific duties andresponsibilities of any particular position. Employees may bedirected to perform job-related tasks other than those specificallypresented in this description.

Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Supervises theater production staff within the performing artsdepartment to ensure smooth and efficient productionoperations
  • Works with department head to generate and manage theaterproduction budgets
  • Ensures compliance with University and industry safetystandards for the use of space, equipment, etc., within the theaterproduction team
  • Works with department head to identify and communicate withfacilities about necessary repairs, scheduled inspections, androutine maintenance
  • Assists with production responsibilities in relevant area(s) ofspecialization (e.g., lighting, electrics, audio, video,carpentry/rigging, etc.).
  • Teaches up to two classes per academic year, dependent uponcredentialing, performing arts departmental needs, and timeavailability
  • Ensures effective management of theater production budgets andunified production calendar
  • Ensures maintenance of appropriate inventory, supplies, andequipment for theater production
  • Assists in the review of rental contracts and other space usagerequests, in collaboration with other University stakeholders
  • Collaborates with the facilities department to maintain thehighest standards of safety for students, faculty, staff, patrons,guests, and visitors, including compliance with all city, state,and federal requirements

Leadership and Strategic Thinking

  • Establishes long- and short-term strategic goals based onassessment data and ensures standards for the department and itsfield are met or exceeded
  • Adapts and modifies leadership based on new information and/ordata; works to set and unite people on the new direction
  • Utilizes effective strategies to build collaboration formaximum execution
  • Aligns division/department purpose and actions with relevantUniversity initiatives and higher education trends
  • Leads through attention to detail in production planning andexecution
  • Provides direct, onsite supervision of theater productionstaff
  • Prioritizes real experience and real success for students
  • Collaborates with performing arts department designers,directors, and other stakeholders to accomplish artistic goals,balancing cost, and artistic integrity

Required Qualifications – Required qualifications toeffectively perform the job. An equivalent combination ofeducation, training and experience will be considered. (Additionalrequirements may be designated by position.)

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university inrelated field required; master’s degree in theater or closelyrelated field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience working with theatricaland stage productions required; experienced leadership of theaterproduction within academic environment strongly preferred
  • Proven success in a leadership and management rolerequired
  • Touring experience preferred
  • Stage management experience preferred

  • Must have knowledge of and experience with safety regulationsand record keeping, lighting systems, sound systems, electricalsystems, current trends in theatrical stage systems, theatricalsuppliers and vendors, budgeting, IT structures and current trendsin theatrical/office technology, and event productionmanagement
  • Must have experience working within professional models ofarts/production management and technical direction for variousartistic events
  • Must be able to work with a positive attitude in highpressure/high stress situations.
  • Must be able to track and work within established budgets
  • Must have strong planning, administrative, organizational,supervisory, and budget management skills
  • Must have up-to-date industry knowledge (lighting systems,audio systems, stage systems, video, film, welding, rigging, andcarpentry)
  • Must have working knowledge of design/architectural software aswell as Microsoft Office applications

  • Fast-paced arts center environment housing both large andsmall-scale performance venues; multiple arts and communicationspersonnel and classrooms; wide variety of performances/events,including touring productions, celebrity artists from diversegenres, academic productions, and University events
  • The employee may be subject to some atmospheric conditions suchas fumes, odor, dust, etc.
