Welcome to WATER 130! My name is Don Kendall. I am a full time faculty member in the Water Systems Technology Program, and will be your instructor for this course. I will do everything I can to help you succeed. Feel free to email me with any questions at donald.kendall@canyons.edu.

Course Description
This course covers mathematical principles related to drinking water distribution and treatment systems and wastewater treatment plants. The focus is on mathematical computations within the expected range of knowledge on the State Water Resources Control Board exams for Drinking Water Distribution 1 and 2, Drinking Water Treatment 1 and 2, and Wastewater Treatment 1 and 2.This course introduces basic mathematical principles related to drinking water distribution and treatment systems and wastewater treatment plants, including areas, volumes, pressure, flow rates, unit conversion, chemical dosage, detention time, and filtration rates.
What to Expect in this Course
This fast paced, eight week summer course is Online-Live and meets once per week. You will attend via Zoom. The Zoom link will be provided in Canvas. You will need to use Canvas to complete and turn in homework assignments each week.
There will be weekly homework assignments designed to help you learn and practice the mathematical concepts covered in class.If you dedicate your time completing the assignments, you will do well in this course. Plan on spending an additonal 6 hours per week outside of class on studying and completing homework assignments.
I request that you submit assignments in Canvas as a single pdf file which contains all of your pages (not multiple pdf files with single pages).If you do not have access to a scanner, I recommend downloading and using the free Adobe Scan app (https://acrobat.adobe.com/us/en/acrobat/mobile/scanner-app.html) on your phone. It will allow you to easily convert your work to a pdf for uploading and submitting in Canvas.
Types of Assessments
Your final grade will be based on a variety of assignments including homework, quizzes and exams.
Textbook Information
This courses uses a free, OER (Open Educational Resource) textbook. The textbook will be provided in Canvas or you can download it from the COC website.

You will need a reliable internet connection, your college email address, and basic computer skills including familiarity with basic windows formats, opening and closing files, sizing windows, starting programs, sending emails, attaching documents, and basic file management skills.

Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
